Introduction

The Code of Ethics of the Librarian Profession plays a vital role in establishing a framework and restrictions for librarians to achieve optimal services in the future and be responsible for individuals and society. The Code of Ethics serves as a guiding principle for librarians to ensure that they provide high-quality services, maintain confidentiality, and respect the rights of library users. This study aims to explore the application and challenges faced in the implementation of professional code of ethics for librarians in the Library and Archives of Aceh Tamiang Regency.

Methodology

This study employed a qualitative approach, using descriptive methods, to collect primary and secondary data through various techniques such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The seven informants involved in this study consisted of librarians, heads of agencies, and library users. The data collected was then analyzed in several stages: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. In addition, data was also validated using source triangulation techniques, technical triangulation, and time triangulation.

The Application of the Code of Ethics of the Librarian Profession

The results of this study showed that the librarians at the Aceh Tamiang District Library and Archives Office had tried to implement the librarian code of ethics, but experienced various obstacles in its implementation. Some of the main causative factors that inhibit the application of the librarian code of ethics include:

1. Unavailability of Supervisory Commission

There is no Supervisory Commission from the Indonesian Librarian Association (IPI) that can oversee and support the implementation of this code of ethics. This lack of supervision and support has hindered the effective implementation of the code of ethics, resulting in confusion among librarians in applying and evaluating the applicable code of ethics.

2. Lack of Interest in Joining Professional Organizations

Librarians show a lack of participation in professional organizations such as IPI, which should be able to provide support and direction. This lack of interest in joining professional organizations has resulted in a lack of knowledge and understanding of the code of ethics among librarians, making it difficult for them to apply and evaluate the code of ethics effectively.

3. The Gap in Socialization and the Direction of Implementation

There are deficiencies in socialization and clear direction regarding the application of the code of ethics, which results in confusion among librarians in applying and evaluating the applicable code of ethics. This gap in socialization and direction has hindered the effective implementation of the code of ethics, resulting in a lack of trust and confidence among library users in the librarians and the library.

Challenges in Implementing the Code of Ethics

Despite the efforts of the librarians at the Aceh Tamiang District Library and Archives Office to implement the code of ethics, they continue to face various challenges in planning and implementing. The absence of good cooperation with the IPI Supervisory Commission is one of the main obstacles in the implementation of this librarian code of ethics. The lack of interest in joining professional organizations and the gap in socialization and direction are also significant challenges that hinder the effective implementation of the code of ethics.

Conclusion

In order to overcome these challenges, it is essential for all parties, including local governments, educational institutions, and professional organizations, to collaborate in increasing the socialization and supervision of the librarian code of ethics. This collaboration will help to increase the quality of librarian services, public trust in this profession, and the effective implementation of the code of ethics. By working together, we can ensure that the librarians at the Aceh Tamiang District Library and Archives Office are able to provide high-quality services and maintain the trust and confidence of library users.
