Introduction

Self-efficacy is a crucial factor that new students need to possess, especially in a new academic environment. When new students have a high level of self-efficacy, they tend to have a positive view and a sense of optimism in dealing with various challenges in the new environment. One form of self-control obtained through self-efficacy is closely related to the communication skills that must be possessed by new students. Therefore, this research focuses on how the relationship between self-efficacy and communication skills among new students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra.

Background of the Study

The Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra, is one of the leading institutions in the field of nursing education. The faculty has a strong commitment to providing high-quality education to its students. However, the transition to a new academic environment can be challenging for new students. Self-efficacy plays a significant role in helping new students to adapt to the new environment and to develop the necessary skills to succeed in their studies. Communication skills are one of the essential skills that new students need to possess in order to interact effectively with their peers, lecturers, and other stakeholders.

Methodology

The design of this study uses a quantitative approach with correlational descriptive methods. The main purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which self-efficacy is related to the communication skills of new students. The researcher took a purposive sample with a total of 62 students. The instruments used in this study consisted of questionnaires to measure self-efficacy and questionnaires to assess the communication skills of new students.

Data Analysis

The data analysis method used is the Spearman RHO correlation test. The results showed that most of the new students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra had a high level of self-efficacy, namely 42 students (68%) and had good communication skills, namely 46 students (74%). This study found a positive and significant relationship between self-efficacy and communication capability, with a significance value of P-value of 0,000 which shows that the results are smaller than α (0.05). The correlation coefficient value (R) found is 0.618, which shows that the higher a person's self-efficacy, the better the communication skills they have.

Results

This analysis indicates that self-efficacy plays an important role in improving the communication skills of new students. Students who believe in their ability to adapt and overcome challenges tend to be more able to express themselves and interact effectively with others. Conversely, students who have low self-efficacy may feel unable to communicate well, which can hamper their adaptation process in a new environment.

Discussion

This research also opens opportunities for further research to explore more in other elements that can affect self-efficacy and communication skills of new students. This is important to understand various factors that can support the academic and social success of students, so that educational institutions can be better prepared in providing the support needed for the development of new students. By understanding the relationship between self-efficacy and communication skills, the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra can design a more effective development program to assist new students in adjusting to the new academic environment.

In conclusion, this study found a positive and significant relationship between self-efficacy and communication skills among new students at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatra. The results of this study suggest that self-efficacy plays an important role in improving the communication skills of new students. Finally, the study only used questionnaires to measure self-efficacy and communication skills, which may not be a comprehensive measure of these constructs.
